Diamond Engagement Rings

Engagement rings are a type of jewelry showing a couple is planning to marry. Both women and men wear engagement rings, though they’re more common on women. How engagement rings look has changed over time, from iron bands to today’s diamond showpieces.

Diamond Engagement Rings

The first known engagement rings originated in the Roman empire. Brides-to-be wore two bands, an iron one for home and a gold one for outside. Iron eventually fell out of favor. Precious metals like gold and platinum better withstand changes in weather, moisture and other environmental quirks. They’re also more easily formed into infinity shanks, prong, engravings and other flourishes.

In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy the first known diamond engagement ring. This gift started a trend which stretches into the modern era, diamond engagement rings. Deposits discovered in Brazil, South Africa and other places increased the availability of diamonds. Now, one doesn’t have to be royalty to enjoy these rings.

Sought-out styles come and go. Monochrome looks with platinum and white gold underscore diamonds’ colorless beauty. Yellow and rose gold add warmth to designs. Additional diamonds like side stones and halos brighten rings while other gemstones contribute color.
