There are no set rules in fashion. Fashion is independence, its creativity and its freedom. It is the best way to express your style, your persona and your beliefs. But, even in fashion, there are some things that can easily go wrong if you don’t know the ABCs of it. Layering necklaces is one of them. Since it is back in trend, we thought now is a good time to go over the tricks and styles of layering so you can come up with your own style of layering that rocks.
Combine Different Styles
To come up with dynamic combinations, you need to throw in all sorts of styles into the mix. Do not hesitate to mix up styles. In fact, it is only by mixing different styles of necklaces can one achieve the best combination. So, the trick here is to juxtapose contrasting designs and styles, modern with classic, pave worn with pearls, geometric shapes with vintage trellis and such. For chains, choose those that are visibly different weight, texture and design. So, for a combination, you can use bead, rolo, cable, rope, wheat, Venetian and snake. It is both stylish and practical to use chains of different kinds, because chains of different styles seldom tangle.
Play with the Lengths
After style comes length. Here also, you have the option of mixing and combining. While layering remember to use chains of varying length. This helps achieve a cascading effect if that’s what you are after. Using too many chains of the same length makes a clutter without aesthetics. So, start with a 16 inch chain which is probably the shortest and work your way down to 30 or 36 inch, whichever is available or as far down as you want to go. Even if you don’t have a 16 inch chain at hand, start with anything that falls closest to the neck.
Throw a Bar in the Mix
One easy way to achieve a great layering look is to throw a bar necklace in the mix. Bar necklaces are chic, they are short and very much in trend right now. Gold, silver, platinum, rose gold, pick whatever you like and add it to the layer. It will always stand out from the rest. If you do not like your bar necklace to be without details, add an engraving of a name, word, letter, anything you like to make it a little more interesting.
